The theme for 2024 was Design and Music.

HönnunarÞing is a festival of design and innovation, held in Húsavík. This year's focus is on music and the various manifestations of the intersection of design and music.

The programme will include, among other things, talks from a professor at the Iceland Academy of the Arts, a boat designer, the mind behind Skálmald, new audio technology, a board member from Bang & Olufsen, and musical performances.

Save the date, it will be fun and educational.

Design Thing is a festival of design and innovation. The festival is held in Húsavík, Iceland, at the beginning of October. This year's focus is on music and the various intersections of design and music. There will be exhibitions, lectures, concerts, workshops, and various other events from 4-5 October 2024. The programme will include, among others, a board member from Bang & Olufsen, a professor from the Iceland University of the Arts, rockers from the metal band Skálmöld, and nationally renowned musicians.

Keynote: Bang & Olufsen - TUULA RYTILÄ

Tuula Rytilä, a board member at Bang & Olufsen, will take part and discuss B&O's design principles. Since 1925, Bang & Olufsen has been creating audio and home entertainment products to the most exacting standards of sound, craftsmanship and design. She will discuss B&O's approach to timeless technology and how sound and design come together in Bang & Olufsen products.

Tuula Rytilä, a member of the Bang & Olufsen board, will join us to discuss B&O's design principles. Una Torfadóttir in GeoSea

The festival concludes with a special moment in the Sea Baths with the musician Una Torfa. Booking for the baths grants access to the concert. Tickets are limited, so booking in advance is recommended.

CCP/Bergur Finnbogason, creative director, CCP

EVE Online is a science fiction multiplayer game set 21,000 years in the future.. To ensure the immersion is as good as possible, what you see and hear is crucial. In this lecture, we will delve into creating a soundscape for a futuristic world, and how sound and design work together to create the best possible experience for the player.

Halla discusses design as a leading force in innovation. In her work, she has initiated and participated in numerous strategic and innovative projects in Iceland and abroad, and has gained knowledge and experience of working across the disciplines of design and architecture, with businesses and governments, and in the creative industries. Halla is a graphic designer by training.

The lyrical, sound and narrative universe of Skálmald

Snæbjörn Ragnarsson, bassist and lyricist, discusses the Skálmald saga-world, its creation, the works themselves, and how more than just the band, the music and the lyrics have helped to shape it all.  The lecture will be informal, with plenty of time for discussion and questions.

DJ Aeroplane and Spaceship

DJ Airplane and Spaceship is a musical and adventure project by Steinunn Eldflaug Harðardóttir, where she blends uplifting dance music, stories about space, splendour of light, theatre and chaos. At concerts, we embark on a journey together through the vast dimensions of the mind, as far as we please… Colour, catchy melodies and a sense of playfulness reign supreme!

DJ Flight and Spaceship is a musical and adventure project by Steinunn Eldflaug Harðardóttir, blending energetic dance music, stories about space, light shows, theatre, and fun. At concerts, we embark on a journey through the vastness of the mind, as far as we desire… Colour, catchy melodies, and playfulness reign supreme!

Goddur - Imagery in heavy metal.

Professor of Graphic Design and artist, Guðmundur Oddur Magnússon, will give a talk on the visual language of heavy metal. In 1991, Guðmundur Oddur returned north to Akureyri after studying graphic design at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. He worked on establishing the Listamiðstöðin (Art Centre) in Grófargili. He introduced a graphic design course at the Akureyri School of Art in 1993 and became Head of the Graphic Design Department at the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 1995, a position he held until the school closed in 1999.

Guðmundur Oddur Magnússon, professor of graphic design and artist, will give a lecture on visual imagery in heavy metal. In 1991, Guðmundur Oddur moved back north to Akureyri after studying graphic design at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

Music in the harbour.
The harbour in Húsavík is a special blend of industry, beauty and community life. There, the ebb and flow of the tide has propelled seafarers, creative minds and pioneers.

A unique group of musicians, led by musician and filmmaker Kira Kira, are blowing the speakers out and hoisting the sails of the experience with bugles.

The harbour in Húsavík is a unique blend of industry, beauty, and community. For centuries, its waves have carried sailors, creative minds, and pioneers forward.

A remarkable group of musicians, led by composer and filmmaker Kira Kira, will raise the speakers and set sail on an experience with brass instruments.

Let's learn and have fun at the same time. The entrepreneur and flavour genius Steini from Húsavík Beer will be on the terrace with his beer on tap and other drinks.

Arnór BarSvar, chieftain of Húsavík, will be hosting questions and tidbits of knowledge at BarSvar in Stéttin.

The theme will be design and music, in the style of Arnór. All aged 20 and over are welcome. Questions will be in Icelandic and English.

Through the programme's tunes and talk, we discover how to strike a chord with innovation, exercise the creative muscle and see an idea become a reality. And you can also dance… on a schooner!
